Because no matter how much we want to believe that our heart is open to everyone, sometimes we allow our own cultural beliefs or stereotypes to get in the way. We’re all used to feeling uncomfortable around people different from us and if you’re in the minority of any group, you feel that directed towards you. But the reality is that through God’s eyes, those people who believe in God are the same and those who don’t believe need to be reached. You’re either a child of God or someone who needs to be: that is all. God sees the inside but we get focused on the outside. In fact, by focusing simply on how WE feel about others we’re really focusing on ourselves, rather than looking for those who need Christ. Usually when looking at the Bible we’re using the word ‘light’ to talk about Jesus or the gospel. It is all about illuminating the mind of every person, showing them their need for a Savior and pointing them towards the only path to heaven: faith in Jesus Christ. But is the gospel more than just a ticket to heaven – a personal matter – an answer to today’s problems? Through the next four messages we’re taking a look at what the purpose of the gospel is all about. Today we’re going to talk about the story of Simon the Sorcerer and how he tried to buy the power that the apostles had. For him, the power of God was just a new, better kind of magic. But the truth of God is much more than that. And although not for sale, everyone has an equal chance at receiving it. You know what I’m talking about. A tough situation that makes you pray more. An embarrassing situation that makes you more cautious with the way you carry yourself in public. A dangerous situation that makes you more careful. A motivational situation that makes you step out and be the person you want to be. And all of these things last for usually a week or two. There come moments in our lives where we wish we were stronger; were better prepared; were ready for anything. Situations arise that are out of our control. We feel like there’s nothing we can do. And no matter where we look, help is fleeting if present at all. The last few weeks we’ve seen God work in amazing ways through the book of Daniel. We’ve seen a successful start to the lives of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. We’ve seen victories in the middle. As we finish our series today, one last time we’ll see the formula to success over any obstacle, problem, or confrontation. At least not with the blunt truth? If we truly care about people in our life then we can’t be afraid to step up with the truth when the opportunity presents itself. As Christians we often seem to be afraid to boldly proclaim that we have the truth which answers all of life’s questions. If we truly believe in God and that faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven, and if we truly believe that the Bible is God’s Word, then why do respond with reservation instead of telling the world that we have absolute truth in our hands? In chapter 2, Daniel was faced with difficult questions. But even though he didn’t know the answer, he boldly proclaimed that he knew where to find it. God gives us answers to life just as true as the ones he spoke to Daniel thousands of years ago. Have confidence and boldness to depend on God’s Word. If you’ve ever seen an interview by a stunt-car driver they pretty much all say the same thing: they have fun on their job because they get to drive a car without thinking about the consequences. Wreck it? Get another one. Never let off the gas all day and burn up the motor? Get another one. While God is definitely a God of second chances, our lives still don’t “reset” that easily. So how do we serve God as much as we should without burning out? But once that change occurs, do we allow our expectations to create a no-win scenario that pushes us back into our previous way of life? Or at least keeps us from moving forward. As we look at the conversion of Saul, try to envision the people around him and their reactions. Acts 9: 1-31
