Last week we picked started a new series called the Un-making of a King.  It’s a continuation of our study through 1 Samuel.  This series picks up right after David kills Goliath.  Soon after, as David keeps winning victory after victory on the battlefield, the people of Israel begin to sing his praises.  This causes jealousy, paranoia, and rage to burst out of King Saul and he half-heartedly tries to take David’s life by throwing a spear at him.  This week we see that it goes from a half-hearted attempt to a full blown assassination plot.

In the middle of Saul’s attempts to kill David, we see a couple of great examples as to how loyalty makes the difference between success or failure.  First how those loyal to King Saul begin to leave him and how those who love David show their loyalty by saving his life.  When we look at the subject of loyalty we can spend a day talking about how people sometimes betray us.  However today is a sermon about what true loyalty looks like and the basis for true loyalty.

Today's sermon begins a new series called "Unmaking of a King".  While the sermon deals with issues of jealousy and how it can destroy someone's life, it goes over some of the verses that people use to say that David and Jonathan were in a homosexual relationship.  This sermon doesn't spend much time on that subject although we did show all the passages people use to make that claim in order to let you see how much of a stretch it is for someone to make that assertion.  If you would like to hear a sermon that deals more directly with the subject of homosexuality & the Bible, listen to this sermon from February 10th, 2013.

To hear the specific discussion about David & Jonathan, listen to today's sermon audio by clicking the Download button below.  Past the initial subject of David & Jonathan's friendship, the main point of this sermon is to introduce the series of sermons that deals with the unmaking of King Saul.  In turn, we see the rise of David as a leader.  This series picks up immediately after David slays the Philistine giant Goliath, becomes the leader of Saul's army, and is now a household name in all of Israel.  While King Saul is pleased with David at first, as David becomes even more loved than Saul, the king's jealousy makes him begin to lash out in anger.
