There are a lot of words that you hear around Christmas – peace, hope, love, joy, giving, gifts, presents, wish list, unwrapping, elation, disappointment, guilt trip on parents for not getting what the kids wanted, removal of gifts just opened due to bad attitudes…. and did I mention peace?  In all honesty, Christmas may be a time when we do think about others but we’re usually wanting something out of this season too.  That’s not necessarily a bad thing but we need to make sure we don’t miss out on one of the greatest gifts that God gave us through the message of Christmas:  HUMILITY.

Humility isn’t a concept we often think about with the Christmas story but don’t worry, our society doesn’t think about it very much any time of the year.  There’s actually a neat online site that measures the number of times a word is used in literature all the way back to 1800.  When you search the word “humility” you find it was at the height of its use back in the 1820’s.  From that point until today, it has decreased by 75%.  But honestly that doesn’t surprise me very much.  Thinking less about ourselves isn’t common.  Viewing our own needs as less important than other things isn’t a natural human trait.  But God tells us it’s necessary.

SunSundayDecDecember15th2013 The Gifts of Christmas - Promises Because of the ice & snow last weekend we had to cut our Christmas series short, but for the next two weeks we’re going to talk about the birth of Jesus Christ.  There are many great things about this time of year.  The greatest of these is that the name of the holiday “Christmas” forces people to at least hear about our Savior.  There are some things about the holiday we may complain about, but there’s no better time to get people talking about Jesus.

One of the things many people, especially my 8-year old son, think about at Christmastime is the giving of gifts.  We all have things we want and sometimes it can become an expectation.  But the greatest gifts we can receive this year come from God.  Today we’re going to focus on the gift of God’s Promises to us. We’re not going to cover all of these in this sermon, but click the link below to see 44 different prophecies that were fulfilled in Jesus Christ, many of those by His birth alone.
